Experiences

Having rich experiences provides students with memories and knowledge on which to build their learning. Providing experiences for students is closely linked to building background knowledge, which is explored further on the Building Background Knowledge tab. Providing rich experiences can also increase student engagement, which in turn boosts learning. Experiences enhance students' curiosity and interest and gives them more ownership of their learning (Vaca, Vaca, & Mraz, 2017). Experiences can be easily incorporated into classroom content as evidenced in the videos below. The first two videos give examples of ways to help students use the environment around them to help them to come up with new writing ideas and topics. The bottom video explores a project that students did to learn more about the effects of plastic bags on the environment and creative ways to re-purpose them.
